How to Use the Rutherford County Jail Roster
The Sheriff's official pages do not publish a separate name-search roster in plain text. The detention page instead links to the visitation and deposit system run by the jail's vendor. Because of that, the surest way to confirm custody is a phone call. The Adult Detention Center answers at (615) 898-7777, and the lobby is open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Avoid third-party jail-roster sites, since they are not official and can be badly out of date or simply wrong.
Have the basics ready before you call or log in. A full name and a date of birth help staff find the right person. Here is a simple order to follow.
- Gather the inmate's full name and date of birth.
- Call the Adult Detention Center at (615) 898-7777 to confirm custody.
- For visits or deposits, set up an account with the jail's vendor service.
- Ask which court and case the charges are tied to.
- Use the court portal to follow the case after booking.
For the case behind a booking, the Rutherford County court records portal lets you track filings and hearing dates by name or case number.
Timing is the tricky part of an inmate search. A new arrest may not show in any system for hours while intake finishes. A release can happen at odd hours too. If a first check comes up empty, wait and try again, and confirm by phone. Staff can tell you whether a booking is in progress, whether bond has been set, and whether the person has already been released.
Rutherford County Adult Detention Center
The detention center is a large county jail by Tennessee standards. It holds 956 beds and houses both pretrial inmates and sentenced prisoners. The maximum local sentence it holds is eight years. It runs as a double-cell facility and provides medical services, a library, legal materials, laundry, and outdoor recreation. Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh oversees the office and the jail.
The county visitation page explains the rules for scheduling time with an inmate.

Use the contact card below for the jail's address and main line. The Sheriff's Office does not offer fingerprinting services, so do not plan to get prints there. The facility sits on New Salem Highway, away from the downtown Judicial Center where court hearings take place. That split matters: the jail handles custody, while the clerk counters handle case files and copies. Plan separate trips if you need both an in-person custody check and a court record.

Rutherford County Inmate Roster Search Fields
When custody lookup is done through the jail's vendor service, you usually pick a facility and then search or log in. The visible fields on the public landing pages are limited, so confirm the exact form in a live session. The table below shows the fields that the vendor system tends to use.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facility | Selection | Likely | Choose the jail or facility before any service. |
| Inmate Name | Text | Likely | Used to find an inmate for visits or deposits. |
| Login / Register | Account | Maybe | Remote visit scheduling may need an account. |
| Deposit Amount | Payment | Yes for deposits | Funds added to commissary or other services. |
Because the public roster is thin, a phone call to (615) 898-7777 stays the best confirmation of whether someone is in custody right now.
What a Rutherford County Inmate Profile Shows
An inmate record packs a lot into one screen. The fields below are the ones a county jail profile typically lists when a roster is available. Some items, such as medical flags or housing pod, are not public for safety reasons.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The inmate's full legal name. |
| Booking Number | The unique number for that booking event. |
| Booking Date | The date and time of intake. |
| Age / Date of Birth | Identity data used to match the record. |
| Charges | The offenses tied to the booking. |
| Arresting Agency | The agency that made the arrest. |
| Bond | Bond amount and type, or a no-bond hold. |
| Court Date | The next scheduled hearing, if set. |
Sensitive items are not part of a public profile. Medical and mental health flags, suicide watch status, protective custody, classification notes, and security flags are kept private for safety. Do not assume mugshots or full booking details are public unless an official tool shows them. For charges and case status, use the court portal or see Rutherford County arrest records.
The Booking and Custody Process
Booking starts after an arrest by the Sheriff's Office, a city police department, the Highway Patrol, or another agency. The person is taken to the Adult Detention Center for intake. Intake includes identity checks, a property inventory, a booking photo, fingerprints, and a medical and mental health screening. Staff then classify the person and assign housing.
Charging papers, any warrant or citation, and bond conditions move with the case. A first appearance or General Sessions event follows as the schedule allows. Once processed, an inmate can use the phone, contact an attorney, get medical care, reach legal materials, and schedule visits.
Pretrial inmates are held because of bond, risk, or unresolved charges. Sentenced inmates are serving a local term. The mix matters because the two groups have different legal status even though they share the same facility.
Bond and Court Links After Booking
Bond is the money or set of conditions that can allow release while a case is pending. After booking, a judge or judicial commissioner often sets a bond amount or releases a person on their own recognizance. The booking record usually lists the bond and the next court date. If bond is allowed, confirm the accepted payment method, any bonding company rules, and the lobby hours before you go.
The charges tie back to a court case, so the jail record and the court record work together. Use the booking number and the case number to follow a matter from intake to disposition. To track hearing dates, see Rutherford County court dockets. If a person missed a court date, a bench warrant or capias may follow, which the warrant records page explains. Keep both numbers handy when you call any office, since staff can find a matter faster with the booking number or the case number in hand.
Inmate Programs at the Detention Center
The jail runs programs aimed at cutting repeat offenses. The focus is education, recovery, faith, and life skills. Classroom space sets the limit on how many programs run at once, and the county adds more as space opens.
- HiSet and GED preparation.
- Alcoholics Anonymous and recovery support.
- Life skills and parenting classes.
- Reformers Unanimous, Bible studies, and church services.
Nonviolent inmates with lesser charges may serve as trusties. A trusty works under supervision on tasks like cleaning, trash, mowing, and grounds work. State law lets a trusty work off one day of a sentence for each day of labor. That credit gives many inmates a reason to take part, and it helps the jail keep the grounds and building in shape.
Rutherford County Jail Visitation Rules
Visitation is by appointment only. Families must pass a background check first, and a felony record disqualifies a visitor under the official rules. Once approved, families may schedule after the first week. Visits are monitored, and bad conduct can end a visit early. Questions go to (615) 904-3132.
You can schedule online through the VendEngine video visitation service, or in person at the visitation lobby if you have no internet access. The video visitation service handles remote visits and account setup.

Plan around the rules so a visit is not lost. Approval takes time because of the background check, so start the process early. Both the visitor and the inmate must follow the conduct rules, and a visit can be cut short for things like nudity or slamming the phone handset. Inmates get two visits per week. The schedule below lists the daily windows.
| Day | Visit Time | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Monday-Sunday | 8:15 a.m. | 30 minutes |
| Monday-Sunday | 9:00 a.m. | 45 minutes |
| Monday-Sunday | 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. | 45 minutes each |
| Monday-Sunday | 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. | 45 minutes each |
Commissary and Money Deposits
Family and friends can add money to an inmate account. You can use cash, debit, or credit at the kiosk in the Visitation Lobby Tuesday through Sunday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Warrants Lobby kiosk runs weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Online deposits go through jailfunds.com. The jail does not accept personal checks or money orders.
Inmates use commissary funds to order food, clothing, hygiene items, and other approved goods. Orders come out of the inmate account. For a commissary problem, the issue line is 1-855-589-7687. Keep your deposit receipts in case a balance question comes up. Funds added by family stay tied to the inmate account, so plan deposits around the timing of orders and any expected release.
Note: A released inmate has one year to claim a remaining commissary balance and five business days to pick up a pending order before items are donated.
Inmate Telephone Accounts
Phone service runs through ICSolutions. Families can choose a prepaid account tied to specific numbers, or a debit account that lets an inmate call anyone. You can set up either type at the ICSolutions kiosk in the Sheriff's Office Warrants lobby.
You can also register with the phone service provider online to fund a call account.

To register by phone, call ICSolutions at 1-888-506-8407. A prepaid account is funded for set numbers, while a debit account lets the inmate call any number until the funds run out. Pick the one that fits how the family wants to handle calls. Detailed jail mail rules, prohibited items, and the mailing-address format were not posted in the official text reviewed, so call (615) 898-7777 before sending mail or photos.
State Prison Versus County Jail
The county jail is not the same as state prison. People held at the Adult Detention Center are in county custody. People sent to state prison are in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Correction. Federal inmates are held in the federal system. Each one has its own lookup tool.
To check a state prisoner, you use Tennessee FOIL. To check a federal inmate, you use the Bureau of Prisons locator. Both tools, plus release notifications and reentry resources, are covered on the Rutherford County released inmates page. For jail population and capacity data, see the jail population page, and for active warrants see warrant records. If you are not sure which system holds a person, start with the county jail by phone, then move to the state or federal tool based on what staff tell you about the case.
